Opening with a defense of botany against those who think it "a trifling insipid amusement and almost childish," Boutell argues that botanists seek to understand "the infinitely varied Beauties of the Vegetable World." He then introduces the basic Linnean terminology, concluding with outlines of "the various classes and orders."
